Ethiopia: Culture

The people of Ethiopia are a proud, beautiful people facing devastating living conditions due to political and geographical conditions.

Ethiopia is a land of diversity not only in the landscape but with the people as well.  In Ethiopia there are over 80 different ethnic groups.  There are modern cities and remote villages.  The modern inhabitants are friendly, intelligent, and trying to save the country from the economic oppression of a government that formerly prohibited free trade.

Ethiopia is a very poor country- statistics show over half of the population lives below the poverty level.  Agriculture accounts for almost half of Ethiopia's Gross Domestic Product.  Coffee is a very important crop in Ethiopia.

Continuous political and geographical conditions have wrecked havoc on this country.  Millions of people have been displaced.  Drought and starvation continue to plague the Ethiopia people.  These combined conditions account for the unfortunate large numbers of children left without parents.

We currently work with two orphanages in Ethiopia.  Our Director went to Ethiopia in January of 2008.  While she was there she visited the orphanages and spent time with our facilitator.  She was able to see how well the children were cared for and the great amount of love they receive from their caregivers.  She was impressed not only by the country of Ethiopia buy by the people of Ethiopia as well.
